Peter Tybus – The Invincible

A kind of Fauvist themed airbrushing which really works for me. It’s a similar vein to Salinas Blanch and David Pelham, and perhaps that’s not that surprising as they all produced Book cover art for Penguin Books.

Unfortunately, I can’t find out much information on Peter Tybus other than that he appears to have been a fairly prolific Illustrator throughout the 1970’s. His slick style, to me, hasn’t really dated. or maybe it’s just that it’s a bit left of field, whatever the reason I’m a fan. If anyone has any more Info on Peter, please let me know.

The novel itself is a Sci-fi Thriller; A military spacecraft lands on an unexplored planet to determine the whereabouts of a lost crew – sound familiar? Well remember this novel was originally written in the 1960’s so predates a certain Jim Cameron film by 20 years or so!

Anyway ‘The Invincible’ is available on Amazon (I’ve read it on the Kindle). Considering the age it’s surprisingly fresh and highly Recommended.

    Peter was my fathers Cousin. I know a bit about his art and life and there are still some airbrushed pictures in my families posession. He was born and educated in Germany, lived and worked in London in the seventies and later in Dubai with his wife and daughter. The latter still lives in UK. Peter died in the nineties in St. Neots near London. If you like to know more feel free to contact me.

  2. I worked alongside Peter Tybus for a while in central London, around 1970-74 at a small design studio called Hewson, Rose & Nicoli in Hams Yard off Piccadilly Circus. Above us was the illustrators agent, Artist Partners. Peter wore denim jacket and jeans, very colourful shirts and had longish, bright orange hair and a typical 70s drooping moustache.
    Then, he looked quite intimidating – a big guy – but was the gentlest person. We once played Simon & Garfunkels ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ at max volume whilst working late on a hot summer evening. He was a prolific sci-fi illustrator then.

  6. I am Peters daughter!! so random that my husband just randomly googled my dads art after hanging some of his works in our living room and found this. I am honoured and excited to read these comments!! I have lost contact with all the family I possibly have left.   8. Hi Camilla. Good to have your reply! I cannot add much more about your dad than was mentioned in my earlier post. They were interesting times. He was one very cool dude and I enjoyed his company enormously! Another small detail was that he carried an American workman’s tin lunchbox – quite unusual.
    Remind me of your mother’s name – Christine/Krystyna perhaps? – he would have spoken of her at that time, and she may well have come into the small office on Hams Yard. I remember one time that we had to go and install a window display at a smallish store somewhere in SE London. Took a lot longer than we expected. The owners of the small business on Hams yard were Martyn Rose and Andy Hewson – he bought one of the very first calculators made by Sinclair. Then, it was hugely expensive at £75! The third member of the company was Fabio Nicoli who’d just left when I joined. He was a graphic designer and had quite a reputation I think for record sleeve design (?). Best wishes… it was great knowing Peter!
