I came across this book in Manchester Central Library, published in 1987 it’s an anthology of Computer Art from the time when 16 bit Amiga’s, and Atari’s had just started to replace C64′s and ZX Spectrum’s as home computers. As you can imagine the book contains plenty of duff art including bad 3d models of manniquins, mirrored balls etc and of course the obligatory Mandlebrot Fractal Set. Much more interesting however was some of the earlier 60′s/70′s Computer and Plotter experimentation examples of which are above.

The portrait is really interesting. At first I thought it was handmade but it’s clear that it’s mechanical. I wonder how it was made.

    Hi,

It was made, well output on a Graphics Drum Plotter, I dont have the book unfortunately only a photocopy – and alas the photocopy only has a snippet of info… It says the portrait was created by a research group at Ohio State University in the 60′s. If I find out more info I’ll let you know!
