I may be mistaken, but I was under the impression that Katsuhiro Otomo like many other manga creators works with a studio of artists to produce these images. Which isn’t to say the picture isn’t noteworthy (the comics are amazing), but it is the work of many, rather than the efforts of an individual.

The coloring attempt is commendable for the effort but work like Otomo’s on Akira is I feel, best left in the original black and white. There’s a gestalt there that is beyond the illustrative attempt at the top with the literal coloring.

Hey Charles,

yeah I know what your saying there, your spot on in fact! I’m not sure if you’ve seen the rest of the comic, the aircraft Otomo has drawn features forward swept wings and looks very much like this jet experimental russian jet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Su-47 though perhaps a bit more butch… anyway a cool design, if not slightly dated against tommorows stealth/wedge-esque designs

I can’t shake the feeling that the jet must be of soviet origin. There’s a lot of Su-27 in that drawing. But given that amount of “cross pollination” that went on in both sides of the cold war that may not be all that surprising.

I have always got the impression that there was a lot people on both sides saying: “If the USA/USSR is researching X, then there must be something too it.” Little knowing that the only reason that either of them are researching it is because the other one is.
