The Planet That Wasn't

A tangerine Death Star spinning in the inky blackness of space, cover art for the 1977 Discus Editon of Isaac Asimov’s ‘The Planet That Wasn’t’. Alas no artist is credited anywhere in the book, so I’m unsure of whom its by, although it look’s like it could be the work of Dean Ellis but that’s purely a guess! If anyone knows more please let me know…..

  1. When I first saw the picture it reminded me of Vincent Di Fate’s work or maybe Chesley Bonestell. The image has that bright 50s or 60s vibe to me.

  2. Yeah I thought It was possibly Dean Ellis because of the way the Sky was rendered… but indeed it could be by your aforementioned artist’s!

  3. A variation of this painting appears in the 1978 book Tomorrow and Beyond: Masterpieces of Science Fiction Art (page 114). The station is yellow and there are differences in the details both on the station and in the background. The painting in the book does have Dean Ellis’ signature. If the painting depicted here was not done by Ellis, than it is at least a derivative of one of his paintings.
