Dean Ellis was first science fiction artist whose work I could immediately identify. I have a copy of this Natives of Space but my Cycle of Fire comes from a later reprint.

Hello to Shawn & Kie – DEAN ELLIS was a close friend of mine and I am sad to say that he passed away on Monday, Columbus Day 10/12/09. I was at his home today with his wife and we are trying to put together a fairly comprehensive Obituary and resume of his works. Unfortunately Dean did not compose one! So we are trying to piece together a list of his works and illustrations in addition to his Museum Collections, etc. If you have any leads where I might find a good source or link to uncover more of Dean’s work, it would be very much appreciated. He continued to work prolifically up until just a few months ago. He died quietly with his best friend Dog Kelsey at his side. He will be missed. Thank you fans of Dean Ellis. Hellow. I am a non-specialist in science-fiction art, but this pictures remember me ones from the book “Cosmos”, by Carl Sagan. There are some images from Rand McNally, very similar to these ones. But they are too old in this case.

Rand McNally. Perhaps a clue?

I’ve always had a love for the cover art on Sci-Fi books, both of these are great examples of why.

The sad thing though… how many times has the “story” in the cover art been better than the actual book?
