To the best of my memory, the vehicle was created by the US military prior to the apocalypse. It was at an outpost in the desert where soldiers were stationed. George Pappard led them to explore what was left of civilization after large explosions had knocked the earth loose from its axis. The super-modified RV protected the travelers from such dangers as gigantic scorpions, cockroach swarms, and I can't remember what else. Seth I saw the movie in the theater when it was released.
